Appreciated everyone. Going to book it for march time next year. Looks like our sort of place so thought I'd give it a go. Places can look spectacular in pictures and be a let down so it's good to read all positive comments

Iceland is great!

Get on the Golden Circle tour and Blue Lagoon. The Gulfoss waterfall is stunning!

The people are all very friendly and a good laugh.

Food and drink can be pretty pricey but overall the place is amazing. We didn't manage to catch the Northern Lights when we were there so I'll have to go again!

Was there two weeks ago for the second time. Love Iceland. I can second Hotel ION middle of frigging nowhere yes but nice hotel and the building is also like a Bond Lair.....

Make sure you hire a 4*4 nothing else and can heartily recommend procar.is for the rental.

Do the blue lagoon it's great if cheesy, go in the evening is my advice and pre book on line so ticket is on your phone to avoid the queues...

Waterfalls are great Gulfoss etc and Geysir is also worth it (slightly randomly the café at the Geysir does the best roast pork I've ever had!)

Icelandair are good and they do some good self drive packages we did the Northern Lights self drive with GPS last year. Works really well as you get a book with loads of attractions and their gps code and it's a laid out itinerary which you can pick and choose, the good thing is you're always going in the right direction rather than doubling back on yourself....This year we stayed at the ION and whilst brilliant it meant a lot of extra driving having to go back to the same place.....

We are already planning our next trip.....

This is the apartment we stayed in which is near the cathedral and about a five minute walk into the city centre.

Check out Wow Air as they were the cheapest when we went. Agree with all the other posts regarding the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle Tour. Our tour took us to a power station which was interesting. If you like sculpture there is an Einer Jonsson sculpture garden next to the cathedral which is nice, and the national museum is worth a visit imo.

Food wasn't too expensive and most bars have happy hours on the drinks.

I would suggest wearing quite a few layers as it was fucking cold outside but boiling inside everywhere due to the cheap heating.

Iceland is possibly my favourite place in the world...

I love it...quite unlike anywhere else...the people are likeable too - especially the ladies

I'd agree about the coach trips to see the Northern Lights, they're a waste of time. Expensive, but worth it, is getting a jeep to take you out of Reykyavik to see if you can get a sighting. We drove up a track to the top of a hill/mountain overlooking the city, Christ knows how these jeeps get up there, but they did.

Went earlier this year.

Easyjet flights from Luton, cheap enough.
Hired a Jeep but as has been said, driving is quite challenging - don't get anything other than a 4WD.

The people are very friendly and laid back. Saw a car go off the road into a ditch - everyone stopped and offered to help.

Drove to Geyser, worth doing.

Went to the blue lagoon, over-commercialised, expensive and full of loud Americans.

Avoid the organised coach trips to see the Northern lights - reminded me of the tacky Majorcan 'Medieval Night' coach trips back in the 70's.

Prices to eat and drink in Reykjavik are similar to London.

Stating the obvious, but I'd wait until at least early summer. I've been twice when it's been light almost all night. At any time of day the light is fantastic.

Climb to the top of the cathedral tower for a view over Reykjavik and get a boat trip across to Akranes. I don't know if it's still there but there was a great restaurant on the docks which was a fishermen's cafe during the day and did great fish in the evenings.

Re: Holiday to Iceland
One of my favourite places. People are a great mix of friendliness, good humour, and self reliance. Its essentially a rugged outdoor pursuit type place.

The Blue Lagoon is good, the water is warm to very warm in places, and no more than 5ft deep max. There is a bar in the middle. The water is completely opaque which some take advantage of.

Try and see the Gulfoss which is a tremendous waterfall which you can get very close to. The tectonic plate bit (Iceland is splitting apart) is interesting rather than spectacular, in the sense that you are standing in a no mans land between the North American and Eurasian plates.

You've a good chance of seeing the Northern lights, if you do, its a spectacular sight, a genuine wonder.

You can do snowmobiling on the glacier if you want, but all these activities mount up quickly, money wise. Snowmobiles are also surprisingly easy to tip over.

Whale watching from the harbour is worth doing, very good chance of seeing pods of killer whales.

There's a geyser worth seeing, called Geysir (its the original) which spews out steam and water every few minutes. Again, if you haven't seen one its pretty impressive.

There are tours that will take in several, if not all of the above. Well worth doing.

Icelandair are silly cheap, I paid £160 return to Manchester. All new planes as far as I could tell.

Iceland is pricey but not Norway type pricey (£5 as opposed to £8 for a beer). Lots of good apartments to rent in Reykyavik, which work out better than hotels.

All in all a great place. Take properly warm clothes, it's not massively cold but the wind can be brutal, there are no trees etc to break it.
